Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada Gregor Robertson (Vancouver Fraserview—South Burnaby, B.C.) announced an investment of over $11 million for 10 businesses and organizations across Northern B.C. to support jobs, productivity, and growth, including in key industries affected by global trade disruptions, such as the advanced manufacturing and forest sectors.The investments were provided through PacifiCan’s Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI) and the Community Economic Development and Diversification Program (CEDD). Prime Minister Mark Carney (Nepean, Ont.) announced that VIA Rail passenger cars will be built in Canada. The federal government is investing more than $4.7 billion for VIA Rail to acquire and maintain 313 new passenger rail cars from Alstom Canada. The cars will be manufactured and assembled in Thunder Bay, Ont., and La Pocatière, Qué., with design and engineering work taking place in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Qué. Prime Minister Mark Carney (Nepean, Ont.) announced the launch of Digital Transformation Canada, a new federal organisation with a clear mission: to use digital solutions to make it easier for Canadians to access the support and services they need from government. He also announced the appointment of Patrick Pichette to spearhead this mission as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Digital Transformation Canada. Statistics Canada published the Labour Force Survey, August 2026. Employment declined by 42,000 (-0.2 per cent) in August and the employment rate fell 0.1 percentage points to 60.8 per cent. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.4 per cent. The full release is available online.
Statistics Canada issued data on sawmills, June 2026. Lumber production increased 0.2 per cent from May to 3 894.4 thousand cubic metres in June. Production was down 1.9 per cent from June 2025. The full release is available online.
Statistics Canada released the Farm Product Price Index, June 2026. The Farm Product Price Index rose 4.0 per cent in June compared with the same month one year earlier. This increase was mainly due to the gain in the cattle and calves index (+17.5 per cent), which more than offset the declines in the indexes of hogs (-6.4 per cent) and total crops (-0.2 per cent). Statistics Canada announced the creation of the Sector Based Producer Price Indexes. These indexes have been built to measure price changes across four producer sectors—energy, non-energy, goods and services—using a methodology developed by the Bank of Canada. The indexes will be published for the first time on October 9, 2026. These data support research on firms’ price-setting behaviours and inflation dynamics, including the development of economic models. The full release is available online.
