Question Period For June 19, 2026

QUESTION SUMMARIES:

Conservatives opened Question Period on Thursday by continuing to press the government on the economy. They pointed to Canada's recession, rising inflation, and government spending, arguing that Liberal policies have increased the cost of living and weakened economic growth.

Conservatives also focused heavily on housing, arguing that government policies have made homeownership increasingly unattainable for Canadians. They linked housing affordability challenges to broader economic conditions and called on the government to change course.

They further questioned the government on public safety, alleging that a foreign government is funding and directing attacks against synagogues, businesses, and the U.S. Consulate in Canada. Conservatives criticized the government's response and called for stronger action against foreign interference and extremism.

Conservatives also pressed the government on the Cowichan decision and property rights, immigration policies affecting non-citizens convicted of crimes, and Bill C-289, which would increase penalties for drug traffickers as part of efforts to combat the opioid crisis.

Bloc Québécois MPs challenged the government's priorities, criticizing its climate change record and its decision to abandon the digital streaming tax and other online levies. They argued that these decisions amounted to capitulation to U.S. President Donald Trump. Bloc MPs also criticized the government's use of closure and time allocation measures, arguing that they concentrate power and limit parliamentary debate.

The Bloc further questioned the government on climate policy and raised concerns that consultation documents related to the decommissioning of the Gentilly-1 nuclear reactor were available only in English. They called for the consultation period to be extended until the process can be conducted in French.

Liberal MPs sought support for Bill C-14, the Bail and Sentencing Reform Act, and Bill C-16, the Protecting Victims Act. They also highlighted efforts to address gender-based violence.

NDP MPs called on the government to clean up mercury contamination affecting Grassy Narrows First Nation and to guarantee access to clean water for the community.

NDP MPs questioned the Prime Minister's comments regarding the conflict involving Iran and criticized the government's position on the issue.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

Quote of the Day

Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne (Saint-Maurice–Champlain, Que.):

Mr. Speaker, let me remind the leader that we will take no lessons from the Conservatives. He needs to be reminded.

We have the second-fastest growing economy in the G7. We have made record investments in infrastructure, generational investments in housing, generational investments in productivity and innovation and generational investments in our defences. We are going to build Canada strong. We are going to support our workers and our industries. We are going to build Canada like never before.

Get on board, man.
