Canada's merchandise exports rose 9.7% in December, led by higher volumes of energy products, while imports edged up 0.7%. Statistics Canada announced its January 2011 Labour Force Survey results. Employment rose for the second consecutive month in January, with a gain of 69,000. At the same time, the unemployment rate increased by 0.2 percentage points to 7.8%, as more people searched for work. Compared with January 2010, employment was up 1.9% (+327,000). The agency released the Consumer Price Index for December 2010. Consumer prices rose 2.4% in the 12 months to December, following the 2.0% increase posted in November.
