The release of the government’s Canada’s Changing Climate Report for 2026 is a reminder that Canada must move much more quickly to adapt to the increasing impacts of climate change in communities around the country. It follows original research from the Elbows Up for Climate campaign showing that 26 million Canadians—more than 60 per cent of the country—have experienced the harms of at least one climate impact this year so far. “The true cost of climate is already being felt by millions of Canadians. It’s being paid for through insurance hikes, damaged homes, energy poverty, inadequate infrastructure—and fear. It’s already on the increasingly-challenging balance sheets of local communities. But there are solutions, and they are in our federal government’s hands. Today’s climate report underscores why Prime Minister Carney’s next budget must include adequate funding for climate preparation and adaptation. Doing so is essential to protect not just our communities, but our economy and our sovereignty — now and in the future,” said Zoe Grams, Executive Director of Climate Caucus.
